In the midst of the ICC World Cup 2023 match against New Zealand, India's emerging young opening batsman, Shubman Gill, etched his name in the record books.
Gill achieved this remarkable feat in his 38th innings, leaving behind the renowned South African cricketer Hashim Amla, who took 40 innings to achieve the same milestone in ODI cricket. Gill, who made his international debut in 2019, boasts an impressive track record in his 38 ODI appearances, featuring six centuries and ten half-centuries. He even has a memorable double century to his name in ODIs, showcasing his invaluable role in the Indian cricket team across different formats.
Notably, Gill made a spectacular comeback in the much-anticipated World Cup clash against Pakistan and has continued to shine, even notching up a half-century against Bangladesh in Pune.
Although Gill, currently ranked as the second-best ODI batsman, missed India's first two games in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 due to illness, he remains on the hunt to claim the top spot, currently held by the unstoppable Babar Azam.
Adding to his recent achievements, Gill was honored with the ICC Player of the Month title for September 2023. He showcased his exceptional batting skills during the Asia Cup and a three-match ODI series against Australia, where he featured prominently in two games.
